As shown in past key articles regarding the unique seaweed extract, fucoidan, new research is further validating fucoidan's anti-cancer properties.
In one study, researchers showed that Fucoidan may be a promising cancer preventative medicine due to its inhibitory effects and induction of human prostate cancer cells. They used a common cancer cell line, DU-145. Fucoidan significantly decreased viability of DU-145 cancer cells in a concentration-dependent manner as shown by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay. The compound also significantly increased chromatin condensation, which indicates apoptosis (cell death), in a concentration-dependent manner.(1)
In another study, researchers reviewed fucoidan and it's anti-estrogenic modes of action and assessed other potentially biologically relevant anti-tumor effects in estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent and independent female cancer cell lines. Amazingly, in the seaweed species, fucus vesiculosus, via and its fucoidan content, showed an induction of autophagy and apoptosis (cell death) on breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer cell lines suggesting additional anti-tumor actions that are independent of ER status in female cancers.(2)
